Department Overview

The Department of Civil Engineering (DoCE) at University of Isfahan (UI) was established in 2004 and started its activities in September 2006 by admitting 30 BSc students.

As of September 2015, the number of undergraduate students in the Department has grown to more than 180 with more than 60 enrolled in MSc programmes, and more than 40 in PhD programmes.

Currently, there are 16 full-time faculty members and 2 administrative assistants.

DoCE has also hosted several national and international scientific events including the Second National Conference on New Materials and Structures (2014), the First International Conference and Exhibition on Trenchless Technology (2016), and the Second National Student Fluid Mechanics Competition (2017).

BSc Programme

The most basic programme offered by the DoCE is a 4-year long BSc programme in Civil Engineering. Civil engineering undergraduate programme aims to train skilled experts for design, construction and management of civil engineering projects.

The average duration of this programme is 4 years. Each semester consists of 16 complete weeks of education. The total number of credits in this programme is 140.

A wide range of optional courses are available through collaboration with other departments at the University of Isfahan, including Transportation, Geology, Economics, Management, Physics and other institutes.

MSc Programmes

MSc programmes are presented in Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Water Resources and Construction Management. The programmes are designed to be completed within a period of 2 years.

During the first year, MSc students complete major coursework including mandatory core courses in their specific major as well as optional courses based on their interests.

Students then select their thesis supervisors based on mutual research interests and begin working on individual research projects under faculty supervision.

PhD Programmes

The Department currently offers PhD programmes in Structural Engineering and Water Resources.

The PhD programme consists of coursework and a research project. Students are required to complete specialized courses in their relevant fields and successfully pass the comprehensive examination.

After completing coursework, PhD candidates focus on their research projects under the guidance of faculty members.

Facilities

💻 Computer Lab

For general use by undergraduate and graduate students, supporting educational activities and academic projects.

🏗 Structural Engineering Lab

Mainly used for research purposes, this laboratory supports students and faculty members through modern experimental systems including Data Acquisition Systems, Servo-Hydraulic Actuators, Compression Testing Machines, Hydraulic Jacks and Rigid Frames.

🪨 Soil Mechanics Lab

Used for educational, research and industrial purposes, this laboratory provides testing facilities for physical and mechanical properties of various soils and rocks in both in-situ and ex-situ conditions.

🏢 Construction Materials and Concrete Lab

This laboratory focuses on measuring mechanical strength and technical properties of construction materials including concrete, brick, cement, gypsum, mortar and aggregate.

💧 Open Channel Hydraulics Lab

Used for educational and research activities, studying open flow characteristics, hydraulic jumps, flow through sluice gates and flow measurement using different types of weirs.
